  • Active antennas and restrictions around the antennas are detailed in the site safety book called the EME Guide.
  • The facility manager will assist in identifying areas that are affected by active antennas, these areas are shaded in red and yellow in the EME Guide.
  • Access through or working within those designated shaded area/s is restricted.
  • The shaded area allows for safe access upto 3m above the rooftop.
  • If scaffolding or ladders are used to work above 3m on the rooftop, the plan needs to be discussed with the facility manager as the restricted shaded areas may change.
  • It is important that steps are put in place your safe work plan so that you do not work in the restricted areas. This minimises the possibility of exceeding the general public exposure limits.
  • Complete the Radioworksafe checklist.

  • Yes, it’s a good idea to complete the checklist to ensure you completed the safety checks.
  • Remember to work safe and if circumstances change contact the facility manager as you may need to redo the RadioWorksafe checklist.

  • The Facility Manager will conduct a site induction and provide you all the relevant information on site to prepare a safe work plan or Safe Work Method Statement.

  • If you need to work in restricted areas (yellow and red), some antennas may need to be deactived to make the area safe. You will need to liaise with the facility manager and mobile carriers to arrange the necessary outages or switch off.
  • Follow the safety instructions from the Facility Manager and in the EME Guide.

  • Each of the mobile carriers has a maintenance or control centre (refer to Contact list).
  • The maintenance centre will guide you through the site safety documentation and arrange assistance, outages or power downs to ensure a safe work place.

  • RadioWorkSafe has a wide range of information available to assist contractors, workers and facility managers to work safely near antennas.
  • The information includes a safety checklist, safety videos, fact sheets and links available for viewing covering a range of topics.

  • Provide a safe work place for staff and contractors.
  • Induct staff and contractors on site safety.
  • Contact Carrier Maintenance/control centre to manage and arrange outages or power downs when required.
  • Provide site information and assist with the preparation of a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS).
  • Ensure that the EME Guide includes all radio operators and systems, including non carriers.

Facility Managers can include the non-carrier antenna systems at their facility by either:
  • Providing the radio system and antenna data to an RF Assessor to include in the site safety documentation – check the EME Guide for the assessor.
  • Getting the site audited by an RF assessor – the data can then be included in the site safety documentation.
  • Getting the radio system operators to engage an RF assessor to update the site safety documentation.
